Picking up from my last article where I shared some of my thoughts on the JLab Audio – JBuds J3M Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones with Mic (Jet Black), this one will be on the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone. This post is a little late from what I had intended to post but I needed more time to audition these. There are a couple others that I am auditioning now including the Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic. I am hoping to post my review on this one sometime over the weekend. In the meantime, below’s my review on the UE SuperFi 5vi.

Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone: (suitable for iPhone/BlackBerry): USD 76.33 available at Amazon (Usual List Price: USD 169.99)

Price Point:

Originally priced at USD 169.99 on Amazon, the UE SuperFi 5vi though aren’t exactly in the highest end of noise isolating earphones with microphone, neither are they the cheapest pair. I finally decided to purchase a pair when the price was reduced to USD 91.99. with shipping back to Singapore, the total price came up to about SGD 150.00. Comparatively, this was 50% off the retail price of SGD 299.00 locally. Arguably, I am willing to trade the 1-year warranty for a locally purchased set and pay half the price for it. A check on Amazon this morning revealed that the priced of the UE SuperFi 5vi has been further reduced to USD 76.33. At this rate, the UE SuperFi 5vi is priced very competitively making it a very good value purchase if you do not mind paying a little more for good set of IEMs.

Sound Quality:

Compared to the stock Apple earphones, the SuperFi 5vi delivers exceptional sound with much better fidelity. Like the JBuds J3M, the UE SuperFi 5vi has a single driver (armature). As a result, sound production is focused in the ‘Mids’ producing balanced sound across the range. I auditioned the SuperFi 5vi on my iPhone listening to G3: Live in Tokyo and did the same with the J3M as a point of reference. In my opinion, I felt the SuperFi 5vi delivered better sound without the feeling of artificially produced bass. The other thing I did noticed was while the J3M performed well, the SuperFi 5vi delivered a better listening experience and gave me the impression of being ‘closer to the source’ and in the midst of the G3 concert.

Design Packaging:

UE did well to provide a hard case to store the SuperFi 5vi away while not in use. What I appreciate about the casing was the compact form factor while being able to hold the earphones without issues. The construction of the case should ensure your earphones should be protected from reasonable abuse minus running it under your car. The end product results in an extremely portable case that will fit nicely into any palm or pocket.

Like the J3M, the SuperFi 5vi could use a full Apple Chip (read: remote + volume control). The single button control that should fall to within your diaphragm area when worn includes controls for:

• Push to Play/Pause
• Push to Talk
• Double Click – Next Track / Triple Click – Previous Track

Overall Value:

If you are in the market for a good pair of noise-isolating earphones, the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi is a good buy given it’s very competitive price of  USD 76.33 right now. With plenty of stocks available on Amazon, the mid-range earphones now costs 45% of the original retail price. Between the J3M and the SuperFi 5vi, I would pick the SuperFi 5vi on the following points below.

• Ultimate Ears has a long history in producing custom-made earphones for musicians until it was acquired by Logitech resulting in the MetroFi, SuperFi and TripleFi range.
• Physical microphone capsule is smaller and separate from the Push-to-Talk control making it less likely to ‘stick’ on your collared business shirts.
• Comfortable fit with Comply Foams compared to flanged units of the J3M that can get uncomfortable over time.
• Comes packaged with compact but strong storage case for earphones.
• Comes packaged with earphone cleaner
• Comes packaged with 2 sets of Comply Foams for superior noise isolation.

Although the J3M costs half the price of the SuperFi 5vi, purchasing a travel case would put you USD 10.00 shy of a set of SuperFi 5vi. For that difference in price, you could have gotten a better sounding set of In-Ear Earphones with fitting Comply Foams.

For overall value, I would give the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/Microphone a respectable 4/5. This is definitely a high value pair of earphones with microphone for use on your iPhone or BlackBerry device.

This is the first review of earphones / ear buds that I have or am currently auditioning from the list here. I had previously mentioned some of these briefly on an earlier article. Having own some of these, I thought perhaps it would be fair for me to share my personal review and hopefully these prove useful in your choice of earphones / ear buds.

As the title states, the sets I will be reviewing are designed for use with the iPhone. The good news is they retain most, if not all their functionality on BlackBerry devices and most other popular mobile and mp3 player devices like the iPod and iPod Touch. Of course for mp3 players, a built-in microphone may not be required. You could opt for a non-mic variant which can usually save you another $10-$40 off the mic variant.

JLab Audio – JBuds J3M Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones with Mic (Jet Black): (suitable for iPhone/BlackBerry): USD 39.95 available at Amazon (Usual List Price: 89.95)

Price Point:

Also available with a non-mic variant (JBuds J3 Micro Atomic – USD 29.99), these are perhaps one of the best value in-ear earphones available today. With most earphones / ear buds spotting built-in microphones designed for use with the iPhone and BlackBerry well in the range of USD 70 – USD 500, the JBuds J3M makes a good buy priced just under USD 40 whilst still delivering a much better acoustic experience over your stock earphones. If the J3M was priced at its usual list price of USD 90, it would be up against a lot more stiff competition from other brands, possibly making it a less likely purchase choice.

Sound Quality:

Compared to the stock ear buds that came with your Apple device, the JBuds J3M delivers a much more balanced music listening experience with emphasis on the mids. If you are looking for a set of bass thumping earphones, you might be sadly disappointed by the J3M. With it’s micro drivers housed in its micro aluminium housing, the J3M delivers sufficient bass but like most other earphones / ear buds will never come close to a set of On-Ear Monitors (OEMs) like the Bose® Around-Ear Headphones or the Bose® On-Ear Headphones.

Design Packaging:

I think for most folks, having to untangle the cables of your earphones / ear buds is the least enjoyable part about these things. The stock ear buds from Apple are notorious when it comes to cable entanglement. The J3M comes constructed in an extremely tangle resistance cable system. The only way you can have these tangled is to deliberately tied them in a dead knot. Having experienced cables tearing and falling apart on my other earphones, these seem to give me a good level of confidence that it is unlikely the J3M will give any of the same problems.

That said, the cable can be a little stiff and retain ‘memory’ on how you stored it earlier. So, it is advisable to wind them up nicely before storing them away. Which brings me to my next point. Somehow, my J3M did not ship with a case. I was pretty sure that it was included in the original product description else, I would not have purchased them. Apparently, the J3 (non-mic variant) does even in Amazon’s Frustration Free Packaging. Not sure why I did not get mine and I am till date, rather disappointed.

Apart from the case, the only thing some folks might miss is volume control on these. Although the JBuds J3M is not the only earphones on the market missing these, I have to agree that the volume control on the Apple stock ear buds are very useful. Otherwise, the single button on the mic-piece of the J3M provides you with the following basic controls.

• Push to Play/Pause
• Push to Talk
• Double Click – Next Track / Triple Click – Previous Track

Overall Value:

Overall, I would say that the JBuds J3M comes in a nice little package while packing good value in terms of audio quality and build. These are one of the sturdiest little ear buds I have ever seen or own. Though not advisable, they do give me the feeling that you could run a car over them and they would just be fine except for a few scuffs.

I can’t give them a 5/5 for the lack of volume control (-1). The ‘missing’ case is another let down (-1) with no proper place to store my J3M except in my jeans pocket. I will have to give them a 3/5 for an otherwise high-value product offering.

I will not claim to be a true audiophile but I will just say that I am rather picky about my music especially when they are played on a portable player. For months now I have been on the search for a decent pair of In-Ear Monitors for my iPhone/iPod. I have tried crappy ones to decent average priced ones. The good news is I now think I have tried a sufficient number of examples to share a decent review.

Apple In-ear Headphones with Remote & Mic

I am currently auditioning a set of Apple’s In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic. Hopefully sometime next week, I will get my hands on the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi Noise Isolating Earphones with Mic. I currently have a pair of JBuds J3M Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones with Mic (Jet Black) and previously, a pair of Bose® In-Ear Headphones. I might be able to get my hands on a pair of Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170vi too.

The much awaited WordPress 3.0 has been released and is faster, stabler, and more secure. New improvements the to popular blogging platform include Custom post types, MU merge, menu editor, Twenty Ten theme, over 1,200 bug fixes. A note of caution before you upgrade your WordPress installation. Because 3.0 is a major release, some changes have been made to the database file structure. Before you click that upgrade button, ensure you have done the following:

• backed-up your current database for good measure.
• updated all your plugins to the latest versions.

Failure to do the above might land you in a fix. I experienced it myself when I had a plugin that I had refrained from updating. On upgrading my WordPress installation, the ‘old’ plugin broke my blog. The fix was a simple update to the plugin.

If you are running premium themes, you might want to check if your designer has released a 3.0 compatible version. There aren’t too much risk of your current themes breaking and not working.

However, a ‘compatible’ theme might well be able to take advantage of the new features in WordPress 3.0.

After months of leaked photos, videos, and speculation on what Apple’s latest gadget after the iPad, the release of the iPhone 4 is now official with Steve Jobs unveiling the device at the 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference on 7th June 2010. Perhaps the next big question now for many, should you get the iPhone 4 when it starts retailing on 24th June?

iPhone 4 Availability and Pricing:

• 15th June: Pre-orders begin.
• 24 June Release: United States, France, Germany United Kingdom and Japan.
• July Release: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
• September Release: 88 other countries.

As expected, the prices of earlier models will be reduced when the latest iPhone 4 hits the market on 24th June. In the U.S., the out-going 3G is priced at $99 and the current 3GS at $199. Come 24 June, the 3G will be taken off the market and 3GS reduced to $99.

For those who are buying their first iPhone, the iPhone 4 should be a no brainer. For existing owners especially the 3GS, it becomes a little tricky. Your current contract with your service provider might mean you need to top-up whatever early equipment upgrade fee on top of the price of the new iPhone 4.

Apple – iPhone 4 – This changes everything. Again.

Apple iPhone IOS 4.0

iOS 4.0 Firmware Update:

The much-anticipated OS 4 update is now set to be release on 21st June as the iOS 4.0 Firmware ahead of the iPhone 4 launch date. Multi-tasking, App Folders and Unified Inbox are among the key features of the new firmware upgrade. For owners of the 3GS, the device will support all enhancements brought on by the updated software. For 3G owners, not all enhancements will be supported due the hardware constraints.

Also notable is the 5.0 MP digital upgrade with 5x Zoom to the onboard camera for the iPhone. The most notable upgrade and innovative of functions in the new iPhone 4 has to be the new FaceTime video chat feature.

Apple – iPhone 4 – FaceTime

Buying or Trade-Up to iPhone 4:

• iPhone 2G / 3G: depending on when you first purchased your device, any contract laid out by your service provider should have or will be expiring very soon. With that in mind, the iPhone 4 upgrade is a natural one. With the 3G spotting a maximum of 16GB, the iPhone 4 doubles that to 32GB instantly. Further to the note that not all iOS 4.0 features are supported on the 3G, current owners have a very good reason to upgrade from a 300MHz rate processor to the iPhone 4′s  1GHz Apple A4 chip. At 3x the processing power, the jump from the 3G to iPhone 4 will be more than a ‘speed bump’. The same Apple A4 chip used on the iPad.
• iPhone 3GS: again, depending on when you purchase your device, the iPhone 4 might have come all at the wrong time for you. Taking into consideration if you have opted to pay an early upgrade fee from the 3G, trading-up to the iPhone 4 will involve another fee. My thought is “extra fee” or “no fee”, there will be a group who must have the latest device. Tech specs wise, the notable add-ons are a front-facing camera (FaceTime) , an LED flashlight for your back camera and of course the speed upgrade from 600MHz to 1GHz.

3GS iPhone Owners Game On:

Unlike the 3G and 3GS which shared the same body and device dimensions, a case or screen protector for older iPhones will not fit the iPhone 4. As a result, manufacturers have reduced the prices of their 3G/3GS products with discounts ranging from 20-50%. Limited Edition cases from Speck are going at a 36% reduction like the Speck Products CandyShell Case for iPhone 3G, 3GS (NightShade Purple) – Limited Edition Color. Other limited edition colors from Speck includes: Darkheart Black, IndiGlow Blue, Juju Julep Green, Moonsicle White and SeaGlass Blue.

Even products like the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi Noise Isolating  Earphones w/  Microphone going for $91.79 are on sale.  That’s a huge 46% price drop from $169.99 for a premium set of good earphones / ear buds with microphone.

I will not be trading-up to the iPhone 4 just yet and here’s why.

• Chasing the Tail: I bought the iPhone 3G when it hit the local stores in October 2008. I traded-up to the iPhone 3GS in October 2009. You get the sense that folks like me will be chasing the tail unless we break the cycle. With all the software updates of iOS 4.0 supported on the iPhone 4, I am happy to stay on my 3GS for now.
• Apple Holding Back: In all fairness, most Apple fans will know this already. Front facing cameras on phone have been around for years. The same can be said for LED flashlights on the main cameras. The iPad has a 16GB / 32GB / 64GB capacity option. The iPod Touch has a 32GB / 64GB flash drive. My 3GS has 32GB of space. The new iPhone 4 has a maximum of 32GB of space too. Where’s the capacity upgrade for the iPhone 4?

I am pretty sure, the ‘iPhone 4.1, 4G, 4HD’ or whatever the name of the next model is will be available in the next 12 months and definitely before Christmas of 2011. With that, it will and had better come with a major capacity upgrade too along will a few ‘tech upgrades’ Steve jobs is keeping in his pockets cos’ he wants to play Santa.

Keynote Speech – Apple announces iPhone 4 (Steve Jobs)

Not too long ago, I wrote a short piece on the state of 3rd party Twitter apps for the iPhone with the acquisition of Tweetie by Twitter. This week, Tweetie was renamed simply as Twitter and made available for download. The official Twitter application for the iPhone just like its Android and BlackBerry versions is completely free to download.

Without having to speculate any further on features for Twitter for iPhone, it may not yet be game over for 3rd party apps. Seesmic for iPhone was released yesterday and is also free to download, making things a little more interesting. Here’s a quick run down on my top 5 picks of social network apps for the iPhone.

Twitter (Social Networking) – Usual Price: Free

As the name suggests, this app is Twitter only. Forget about adding your Facebook account to the mix. If you need to add your Facebook account, Twitter for iPhone is not for you. The official Twitter app for the iPhone, Twitter has 2 main features above 3rd party apps. Truth be told, I’m not quite getting the plot.

1. Sign-up for Twitter account from within the app
2. Browse and search Twitter without an account

To be honest, I do not see the how the 2 features above make for any ‘wow’ factor. Simply said, why bother with those? It’s either you have a Twitter account or not. I will not download Twitter for iPhone to browse Twitter when I can do it on my browser. Why would I want to browse tweets to begin with?

Seesmic (Social Networking) – Usual Price: Free (Recommended)

This is a rather interesting one and I am surprise it came so late. Like the desktop and BlackBerry versions, Seesmic for iPhone offers a clean and easy to use UI. Basic functionalities that you will need like photo uploads (Facebook photos upload to album), Geo-Mapping and URL attachments are also available. On top of allowing you to add multiple Twitter accounts, you can add a Facebook account including a Ping.fm account. Clearly, the Ping.fm integration is a plus but I am not sure why the limit to just one.

Thanks to both Loic and Mathieu who both dropped in and pointed out that users could in fact post to multiple accounts at one go. See comments at the end of this post for more information.

Although Seesmic is clean and easy to navigate, the inability to multi-task maybe a let down for some. You can only send 1 message at a time. Unlike other apps, Seesmic does not allow you to type your message and send it through multiple Twitter accounts and your Facebook account at the same time. Something that could have been done once on other apps needs to be repeated for each account when using Seesmic.

Some noteable features of Seesmic includes:

• photo uploads (Facebook photos uploading in album)
• multiple Twitter accounts + Facebook integration
• Ping.fm integration
• URL shrinking (via bit.ly)
• GeoTagging
• old retweet styles (option to quote)

On that note, Seesmic is really looking good as a solid 3rd party social app for the iPhone. Support for multiple Ping.fm accounts and API integration for bit.ly in future updates will be very nice indeed.

TweetDeck (Social Networking) – Usual Price: Free

In my mind, this is the big daddy of all Twitter apps for the iPhone for simple reasons. Like Twitter and Seesmic, TweetDeck is totally ad-free and packs a punch in the features department. For those who want nothing less than 1,001 features even though you may not use them, TweetDeck a great app. My only gripe, I can get a little busy at times. Maybe it’s the ‘timeline’ nature of the app or maybe it’s all the features packed into it. If you can live with that, check out TweetDeck.

Some of the features packed into TweetDeck includes:

• photo uploads (Facebook photos uploading in album)
• API integration for URL shrinking (bit.ly)
• multiple Twitter accounts + Facebook integration
• GeoTagging
• customizable columns
• old retweet styles (option to quote)

HootSuite (Social Networking) – Usual Price: 2.99 (Favorite)

There is a ‘Lite’ version but I would suggest giving that a miss. HootSuite is one 3rd party Twitter app that I might still be willing to spend 3 bucks on even though there are alternatives that are free. With the recent addition of Facebook integration, you can now access and post to multiple Twitter accounts and Facebook at the same time.

If there is something the guys at HootSuite can work on, it’s to allow upload Facebook photos direct to albums and not a link. Otherwise, with the super clean UI and all the features you will need like ow.ly URL shortener and GeoTagging, HootSuite offers full functionality without the overkill in timeline Twitter apps since more is not always good. If you are using Twitter for business, HootSuite is 3 bucks well spent.

• delete tweets from app without having to login to web version
• focused and uber clean UI

Reportage (Social Networking) – Usual Price: 3.99 / Current Price: Free

Alternative to timeline based apps, Reportage is best suited for single Twitter account users due to the lack of multiple account support and Facebook integration. The tuner style app is best for tweeps who find timeline based apps too busy for their liking. Personally, I use Reportage to read up on  people I follow on Twitter instead of having to sort through a whole mess of tweets from other tweeps.

With 2 Betas released earlier this month, a final and working release of WordPress 3.0 is on track for sometime soon this month. As with most major release, WP3.0 will bring quite a few changes which might have a few compatibility issues with plugins and themes.

Multiple WordPress Sites:

Version 3 of the popular blogging platform will bring on a number of major improvements and changes with WPMU (Multi-User) and WP merged into one. This integration will have a direct impact on sites that have multiple WordPress installations that have steered clear of WPMU. I too have a domain with WP installed on the main folder and another on a subfolder. I am still unsure if there will be any complications of merge them into one installation but I am not holding my breath.

WordPress Themes:

Kubrick will finally be retired and a new theme 2010 will be the new default theme for all installations. If you current theme is updated regularly either by yourself or the developers, transition to WP3.0 should not cause too much issues. I would however hold-off any upgrades to the core release until I am sure the developers have updated the themes to support and leverage on v3.0 new features. On that note, if you are intending on purchasing a premium theme, perhaps you should hold that thought for awhile or until you are sure your new premium theme is compatible with WP3.0. From what I have observed, a number of developers are still waiting on the final core release of WordPress 3.0 before they update their themes. Further, with CSS3.0 and HTML5 catching on, it will be interesting to see how developers are incorporating the changes in web standards into their themes.

I have 3 sites running on the GraphPaperPress framework. Although there is nothing wrong with GPP and I like it a lot, I have played with the thought of hacking my custom theme for awhile now. I could either code one up from scratch and use themes like sandbox as a starting point, or I could get a head start by using a more established framework. After using child themes for the last 2 years, going on this route seems to be the most sensible approach. I have decided to start a little pet project and create a child theme based on the Thematic framework. Hybrid was the other framework I was considering but I eventually decided to start with Thematic for now.
